Girl Power

One of the many things that drew me to the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy’s success story is that Abdul understood that he needed to address the needs of the whole girl. Improvement in the classroom can happen faster if the girls feel embodied and if they have an outlet for their creativity. The sports, clubs and art opportunities started out as a way to give the students a safe place to be after class, but it became an integral part of the community. The girls gained confidence and marketable skills through their sports teams and art clubs.

I was thrilled, then, when Jill Stein Lipset asked me to speak on a panel at her GIRL POWER Camp. It is a week full of opportunities for girls to express their power by cultivating beauty in their minds, bodies and spirits. If you know girls in the Twin Cities area, spread the word!

The Power House’s GIRL P-O-W-E-R CAMP is a week-long adventure of physical activity, creative expression, and self-discovery. Geared for girls ages 11-14, this experience will provide activities that help each girl discover what inspires her in the world and how to create the life of her dreams! Each day will have a physical practice, such as CrossFit, Yoga, or hiking, as well as group and individual activities that explore big picture concepts and skills such as stress management, community building, goal-setting, and gratitude.
